How Long Does Builder Gel Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)
Short answer: a builder gel manicure usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks. After that the gel still looks fine, but your natural nail has grown out, so the balance of the nail shifts and it's time for your next appointment.
What affects how long builder gel lasts
1. Preparation. Most lifting starts at the cuticle. Careful cuticle work and removing dead skin from the nail plate help the gel stick properly. That's why I start every builder gel manicure with a detailed Slavic combined prep (e-file plus fine nippers).
2. How fast your nails grow. Fast-growing nails reach the "time to refresh" point sooner.
3. Your hands' daily life. Hot water, cleaning products and using your nails as tools (opening cans, scratching off labels) all shorten wear time.
4. Oils and dryness. Very oily nail plates can make gel lift sooner; very dry, thin nails can bend and crack the gel. Builder gel is chosen precisely because it gives thin nails structure.
When to book your next appointment
Book your next builder gel appointment for 3–4 weeks after the last one. Waiting much longer means the stress point of the nail moves forward as it grows, and the nail is more likely to break.
At Hot Girl Nails there's no separate refill price: you simply book builder gel again, and removal of your previous gel is included.
How to make builder gel last longer
- Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes
- Use cuticle oil daily — it keeps the nail and the skin around it flexible
- Don't use your nails as tools
- Never pick or peel the gel — it takes layers of your natural nail with it
- Message your nail artist if a nail lifts — a small fix early saves the nail
Small fixes within 7 days of your appointment are free at my studio. See all prices on the prices page.
Signs it's time for a refresh
- Visible regrowth at the cuticle
- The nail feels heavier at the tip
- A small lift at the edge or near the cuticle
Questions
How long does BIAB last?
BIAB is a type of builder gel, so the answer is the same: usually 3–4 weeks.
Why is my builder gel lifting after a week?
Most often it's preparation (cuticle or oils left on the nail) or water and chemicals at home. If it happens within 7 days of your appointment with me, message me — small fixes are free.
Can I keep builder gel on for 6 weeks?
It's not a good idea. As the nail grows, the strongest point moves forward and the nail is more likely to break or lift.
Does builder gel damage nails?
Damage usually comes from over-filing or peeling the gel off, not from the gel itself.
